History of Gadisar Lake Jaisalmer Rajasthan

Lake Gadisar situated in the middle of a desert on the outskirts of Jaisalmer was built by the ruler of Jaisalmer Raja Rawal Jaisal as a pond in the 12th – 13th AD.

This lake was built in the Middle Ages to meet the water needs of the people here. And it is said that in the old times, this lake acted as a water conservation system and became a life-saving source of water in Jaisalmer.

And this lake was largely successful in removing the water shortage of the people of Jaisalmer.

The Name of this lake was named after Maharawal Gadsi Singh. Who revived the entire lake area by renovation in 1400 AD.

Quite beautiful to see the Tillan Gate which is carved on the rich yellow sandstone that provides a majestic attractive entrance to Gadisar Lake. When tourists reach to visit the lake Gadisar, the first Tillan gate is visible which welcomes the tourists in the beautiful surroundings of the lake.

It is said that the huge gate on the lake Gadisar was built by a prostitute Tilo. In view of the public opposition, Maharawal Ghadasi wanted to demolish it, but the Shiva temple was built on him by tilo.

The Tillan Gate was built around the last few years of the 19th century by the royal courtesy of the then ruler of Jaisalmer. Later in 1908 an idol of Lord Vishnu was installed as a Krishna temple.

There are temples on the banks of Lake Gadisar which is surrounded by artfully carved thirty-six temples, Deoghri and Ghats. Due to being near Bharatpur, various migratory birds can also be seen on the banks of Lake Gadisar, which further enhances its beauty.
