Dholpur
Dholpur
is a small place with a very eventful history. Founded by Dhawal Deo, this historic
city was ruled by the Chauhan family from the mid-9th century. Its strategic location
was its major attraction and hence it was invaded repeatedly.
Places
of Interest in Dholpur The main attractions are Shergarh Fort (built by
Sher Shah Suri on the site of an earlier Hindu fortress), Khanpur Mahal (palace
of Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal), Shiva Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva)
and Talab-e-shahi (the picturesque lake, 40kms from Dholpur, that attracts various
migratory birds in winter).
Dausa
The
ancient town of Dausa has archaeological significance. Several antiques were discovered
here, which are believed to be of the medieval period. These have included remnants
of stone images of the chief Hindu gods and goddesses.
Places of Interest
in Dausa The Mataji ka Mandir is a temple that was built in the 20th century.
The front wall of this temple embodies some finely carved sculptures dating back
to12th century. There are five Shiva temples belong to the medieval period. Dausa
also has an old fort and there are numerous "havelis" (mansions) located
in and around the town.
Dungarpur
Founded
in the late 13th century, Dungarpur is as famous for its topography and wildlife
as it is for its unique style of architecture. The stretches of fertile alluvial
soil are bounded by the Aravalli hills. Two rivers, Mahi and Som, meander through
the region.
Places of Interest in Dungarpur A variety of trees
dot the area including teak, mango and date trees. The diverse wildlife consists
of the jackal, hyena, Indian fox, porcupine, black faced monkey, partridge, cuckoo,
eagle and vulture, among others. The places of interest include Udai Bilas Palace
(the royal residence), Juna Mahal (the 13th century edifice with beautiful frescoes
and miniature paintings) and Government Archeological Museum.
