Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary |
At
a distance of 37 km from Bikaner, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary in Bikaner is a
natural haven on the banks of Lake Gajner near Gajner Palace. It is one of the
famous wildlife sanctuaries in Rajasthan and one of the major places to visit
in Bikaner.
Situated
atop a small hill, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is an oasis and a reserve rich in
flora and fauna with dense green forest cover. The sanctuary was earlier used
as a hunting ground by Sri Ganga Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner. The sanctuary has
a beautiful lake, which, apart from complementing the beauty, is used by the
animals living here to quench their thirst. It is one of the proposed forests
for cheetah reproduction in India.
The
interesting part of this sanctuary is the beautiful Gajner Palace which has now
been converted into a heritage and luxury hotel. The Gajner Palace Hotel first
used the Maharaja and his honored guests including Viceroys and other prominent
figures who were invited for the annual sand grouse hunting activity.
Gajner's the lake attracts thousands of water birds including Imperial Sand Grouse, Indian
Hubara Bustards, Water Fowls, Demoiselle Cranes and other varieties of
migratory birds. The Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to blackbuck,
chinkara, antelope, wild boar, deer, wild birds, nilgai (blue bulls) and desert
foxes that roam amidst lush gardens, wild forests and majestic castles.
The
Gajner Palace Hotel regularly conducts jungle safaris in the sanctuary. The
hotel has its own exclusive fleet of vehicles and all the jungle safaris are
accompanied by a highly knowledgeable guide.
