Lake Erie is the fourth largest of the five Great Lakes in North America.
It is the tenth largest lake in the world. It is the southernmost of the lakes in North America and is located between Lakes Huron and Ontario.
It is bordered by Canada to the north, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio to the southeast, Michigan and Ohio to the west.
It has a maximum length of 245 miles from north-east to south-west, an average width of 50 miles (from 28 to 58 miles) and an area of
9,600 square miles.
This lake is at an altitude of 573 feet above sea level and 8 feet below the surface of Lake Huron. The maximum depth of its water is 210 feet, the average depth is 100 feet.
It is joined by the Detroit River and receives water from all the major lakes except Lake Ontario.
Apart from this, Grand River meets from north, Maumee, Sandusky and Huron from west and Cuyahoga rivers from south. The Erie's water is drained by the Niagara River, which drains into Lake Ontario.
Lake Ero is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and dangerous for traffic because Niagara Falls is retreating every day.
The commercial importance of this lake has increased a lot due to the exit of canals, which are the main means of going from east to west.
The Welland Canal removes the inconvenience caused by the waterfall in coming directly from the Atlantic Sea near the Niagara Falls.
