Kankwari Fort History

The fort of Kankwari was built by Raja Jai Singh during the 16th century. Raja Jai Singh was the ruler of Amber and was given the position at a very young age due to the death of the predecessor in 1621 and was the sole heir to the throne.

Along with this he was also the senior commander of the Mughal Empire and served under the rule of Shah Jahan and then his son Aurangzeb.

Darashikoh would have been the next successor after the reign of Shah Jahan. However, Shah Jahan’s second son Aurangzeb was not happy with this as he wanted to be the next successor.

Hence Aurangzeb imprisoned his brother Darashikoh in the fort of Kankwari to get his throne. Aurangzeb chose this fort for his brother’s captivity as it was at a reasonable distance from Delhi according to him and it was under the supervision of one of his most trusted men, Jai Singh.

It is said that Aurangzeb surrounded the fort with a huge rampart and guarded it against all sides by his armed soldiers so that Darashikoh’s supporters from the Mughal army could not save him from the fort.
